Disney’s Lightning Lane is a fast-track option designed to help visitors skip the regular standby lines at certain attractions in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. As of July 2024, Lighting Lane service took over Genie+, Lightning Lane offers a more convenient and time-efficient way for guests to experience the magic of the parks with shorter wait times. This system replaced Genie+ which in turn replaced Disney’s FastPass, which was discontinued during the pandemic.

In this blog, we’ll explore what Lightning Lane is, the different types of passes available, and how you can use it at both Disneyland Resort in California. I will post a different blog on Lighting Lane for Walt Disney World as that is a whole blog in itself.

What is Disneyland’s Lightning Lane?

Disney’s Lightning Lane is essentially a shortcut to the front of the line for select rides and attractions within the Disney parks. Guests who purchase access to Lightning Lane can bypass the standard wait times for certain rides, making it an appealing option for those who want to maximize their time at the park.

The Lightning Lane includes a wide variety of Disney attractions at each of their parks. However, not all rides are available through Lightning Lane – some are part of the Individual Lightning Lane, which requires separate purchases.

Types of Lightning Lane Passes

At Disneyland California, the Lightning Lane system provides a way to skip regular ride queues by purchasing access to shorter lines for various attractions. There are different pass options available, such as Single Pass, Multi Pass, and Premier Pass. Here’s a breakdown of each, along with their differences, advantages, and how to purchase them:

1. Lightning Lane Single Pass

  • What It Does: The Single Pass allows you to purchase access to a single Lightning Lane for a specific attraction. After making your selection and paying for it, you get to bypass the regular standby line for that one ride. With this pass you will get to choose between Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland Park or Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure which are the most popular attractions in each park.

  • Difference from Other Passes: This pass is for individual use and only applies to one ride at a time again either Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland Park or Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure. Lighting Lane Single Pass is not included in the Lighting Lane Multi Pass. So, if you would want to ride either Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland Park or Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure I would recommend you purchasing both the Lighting Lane Single Pass and the Multi Pass.

  • Advantages: It's perfect for guests who want to skip the line for a popular attraction without committing to a larger package. You can buy a single pass for each ride you want to access Lightning Lane for.

  • How to Purchase: You can purchase Single Passes via the Disneyland app after entering the park.

  • When to Purchase: You can purchase them once you've walked through the entrance gate of the park. Availability is based on the attraction and the time of day. If you are looking to ride either Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance or Radiator Springs Racers (which both of these attractions are a MUST) I would recommend purchasing this pass as soon as you enter the park.

  • Can You Modify It? Typically, once purchased, Lightning Lane passes cannot be modified. If your plans change, you may have to cancel and rebook, depending on availability.

  • Cost: Prices vary depending on the attraction, time of day, and demand. It’s generally between $15 and $25 per person per ride.

2. Lightning Lane Multi Pass

  • What It Does: The Multi Pass provides access to multiple attractions with a single purchase. You get to skip the standby lines for a set of pre-selected rides.

  • Difference from Other Passes: The Multi Pass allows you to select several attractions at once, which could be more economical for visitors who want to access several Lightning Lanes. This pass does not include the Lighting Lane Single Pass so you will not have access to booking Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland Park or Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure.

  • Advantages: It's more cost-effective if you plan on skipping several lines in one day. You can experience a variety of attractions with one purchase. You can make Lightning Lane selections one at a time throughout the day. Once you've redeemed your selection (or after 2 hours has passed since you made your selection), you can book your next multi pass attraction. If you are park hopping, you can start making Lighting Lane selections for the other park after 11am (same time as you can enter the other park).

  • How to Purchase: Available through the Disneyland app, you can purchase it when you're in the park or you can purchase it ahead of time when you purchase your theme park tickets as a ticket add-on.

  • When to Purchase: As with the Single Pass, you can buy the Multi Pass anytime during the day, depending on availability. Availability can be limited. However, I would recommend purchasing it at the time of your theme park tickets as an add-on so as soon as you pass through the park entrance gates you can go ahead and start selecting your Lighting Lane Multi Pass attractions.

  • Can You Modify It? You can modify your Lightning Lane selections via the Tip Board in the Disneyland app, but it depends on attraction availability. Changing ride selections may require cancellation and rebooking.

  • Cost: Prices can range from $30 to $60 or more depending on demand and the date/season (weekday vs. weekend, high season vs. low season).

3. Premier Access Pass

  • What It Does: The Premier Pass provides the most comprehensive access to Lightning Lane queues across both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. This premium access allows unlimited Lightning Lane access for all available attractions in both parks.

  • Difference from Other Passes: This pass provides full flexibility, allowing you to skip all the available Lighting Lane attraction lines, even including Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland Park and Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure without worrying about ride-by-ride selection. It’s the highest-tier option and allows for premium access to most attractions.

  • Advantages: This is best for visitors who want to skip all or most ride lines across both parks, with no need to worry about individual ride availability. It’s ideal for maximizing your park time and minimizing wait times. If you are park hopping, you can start making Lighting Lane selections for the other park after 11am (same time as you can enter the other park).

  • How to Purchase: The Premier Access Pass can typically be purchased through the Disneyland website or app 2 days in advance of your park visit, but availability may be limited and tend to sell out quickly.

  • When to Purchase: You can purchase this pass in advance when booking your tickets or during your visit. This is often a high-demand option.

  • Can You Modify It? Typically, the Premier Pass is flexible, but specific modifications may still depend on availability.

  • Cost: The Premier Access Pass is the most expensive, typically costing around $300 to $400 per person depending on the season and demand.

Key Differences Between Passes:

  • Single Pass is ideal for skipping one attraction's line at a time, giving you a flexible but single-use benefit. The Single Pass can be used for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction in Disneyland Park or Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure.

  • Multi Pass allows you to skip the lines for multiple attractions in a single purchase, which is more cost-effective if you want to experience several rides. The Single Pass is not included with the Multi Pass.

  • Premier Pass offers the best access for skipping lines, with unlimited access to the Lighting Lane attractions across both parks including Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland and Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure.

Purchasing Lightning Lane Passes:

  • You can buy all of these passes through the Disneyland app, where you can select your rides and times (if applicable) and complete the purchase.

  • Single Passes can only be purchased the day of your visit, once you’ve entered the park.

  • Multi Passes can be purchased the day of your visit, once you’ve entered the park or ahead of time when you purchase your theme park tickets as an add-on.

  • Premier Passes Can be purchased 2 days in advance from your park visit. Based on limited availability.

Modifying Selections:

  • Once you've booked a Lightning Lane pass, changes to ride selections are typically not allowed. You can cancel and rebook, if necessary, but availability will depend on how full the park is and how popular the rides are.

Cost Variations:

  • Prices are subject to change based on demand, time of day, and the season. Expect higher costs during peak periods like holidays or weekends. Always check the app for the most up-to-date pricing before purchasing.

In summary:

  • Single Pass: Skip one rides stand by line, either Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland or Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure.

  • Multi Pass: Skip multiple rides stand by lines.

  • Premier Pass: Unlimited access to Lightning Lane across both parks.

  • You can buy these passes through the Disneyland app, and the costs will vary based on demand, date, season and ride selections.

Using the Lighting Lane Multi Pass effectively at Disneyland can really enhance your experience by maximizing your time on rides. Let's break down the strategies you’ve outlined and expand on them:

Tip 1: Book Another Lighting Lane Immediately After Scanning Your Pass

  • Timing is key: The 2-hour rule gives you a lot of flexibility. Once you enter the attraction and scan your pass, you can start looking for another Lighting Lane booking immediately—don’t wait until you’ve finished the ride. As you’re walking through the line, open the Disneyland app and start planning your next pick.

  • Efficiency: Booking right after scanning allows you to optimize your time. If your current ride is short, you could potentially squeeze in another Lighting Lane attraction before the next ride. Always be on the lookout for new availability, as some popular rides book up quickly.

Tip 2: Don’t Waste Time on Less Popular Attractions in the Morning

  • Prioritize the popular rides early on: The more in-demand attractions like Indiana Jones, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, and Guardians of the Galaxy tend to sell out fast. If you’re there early in the day (especially if you’re booking Lighting Lane right as the park opens), use this time to secure those prime ride slots.

  • Save less popular rides for later: Attractions that typically have shorter wait times, like Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Star Tours, or It’s a Small World, should be considered for later in the day. You might find these rides have lower demand or are available later in the day, so there's no rush to book them first thing.

Tip 3: Don’t Bounce Too Much Between Park Sides

  • Minimize walking time: Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are large parks. If you’re trying to bounce from one side to the other, you'll waste valuable time walking. Try to plan out your Lighting Lane bookings so you’re not constantly crossing the park.

  • Strategize with your rides: If you're focused on Disneyland, you might prioritize rides that are clustered together, such as Indiana Jones, Haunted Mansion, and Big Thunder Mountain, which are all near each other in the same general area. Similarly, in California Adventure, try booking attractions near each other like Incredicoaster, Soarin’, and Toy Story Midway Mania.

Two Different Strategies Depending on Your Group:

Strategy 1: Traveling with Small Children

  • Focus on Fantasyland rides: When you’re with young children, prioritize rides that are gentle and family-friendly, like It’s a Small World, The Little Mermaid, and Buzz Lightyear. These rides often have shorter wait times and are beloved by kids.

  • Don’t stress over major thrill rides: Since your kids may not be interested in the more intense attractions, you can skip booking Lighting Lane for these rides, leaving more room to grab a spot for the family-oriented attractions.

Strategy 2: Traveling with Adults

  • Go for thrills: Adults or thrill-seekers should focus on more intense rides like Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Big Thunder Mountain, Incredicoaster, or Guardians of the Galaxy. These rides typically have higher demand and longer waits, so grab your Lighting Lane passes for these early in the day to avoid long waits later.

  • Skip the slow-paced rides: You may want to skip things like Small World and Autopia, as they don't have the same adrenaline-pumping thrill, unless you're in the mood for a relaxing experience in between the action.

Other Useful Tips:

  • Keep an eye on the app: Even if you’ve booked a Lighting Lane pass, continually check the app to see if there are cancellations or new time slots available. Sometimes rides become available unexpectedly, and you could grab a great spot.

  • Plan for the busiest times: Midday and late afternoon can be particularly crowded, so try to use your Lighting Lane passes for popular attractions earlier in the day when the crowds are still manageable.

By using these tips, you can maximize your day at the park, minimize wait times, and have a much more efficient experience with the Lighting Lane system!

Bonus Tip: Maximizing the Free Lighting Lane Pass When a Ride is Down

When you’ve booked a Lighting Lane pass, and the ride temporarily goes down during your scheduled time, you are given a special free pass that can be used for any other Lighting Lane attraction for the rest of the day. This is a great opportunity to use to your advantage! Here are a few strategies to make the most of this unexpected perk:

1. Don’t Waste It on Less Popular Attractions

  • Target the big ones: While the pass can be used for any attraction with a Lighting Lane, it’s smart to reserve this free pass for one of the more popular or hard-to-get attractions. If you’ve missed out on booking Indiana Jones, Smuggler’s Run, or Guardians of the Galaxy earlier in the day, this is your chance to grab a spot on those high-demand rides that you might not have been able to book due to time limitations or sold-out slots.

2. Ride a Popular Attraction Sooner

  • Skip the wait for later times: If you were able to book a popular attraction like Matterhorn Bobsleds for a late time slot (say, 10pm), but you’ve been given the free pass, take advantage of the opportunity to ride it sooner! This lets you free up your evening for other plans or more rides and avoids the late-night rush.

  • Example: Let’s say you booked Smuggler's Run for 3pm, but it goes down. You now have the opportunity to use the free pass for another ride that might otherwise have been unavailable for the rest of the day. For example, use it to ride the Matterhorn Bobsleds or Space Mountain earlier, and once you’ve ridden it, cancel your late-night Matterhorn booking and reselect a new attraction, freeing up your time for something else.

3. Be Strategic About Cancellations and Rescheduling

  • Cancel old selections to maximize your day: If your free pass allows you to ride a popular attraction earlier than you originally planned, use that opportunity to adjust your schedule. Once you’ve used your free pass for an earlier ride, go into the Disneyland app and cancel your late Lighting Lane booking for that same attraction (like the Matterhorn Bobsleds at 10pm) and reselect another ride that you may not have had a chance to book earlier.

  • Example Scenario: You had Indiana Jones booked for 5pm but were hoping to ride it earlier. With your free pass from a ride going down, you now get to hop on Indiana Jones earlier in the day. You can then cancel the 5pm booking and choose a new attraction like Big Thunder Mountain or Space Mountain for later.

4. Keep Track of Your New Pass and Timing

  • Use it within the day: The special Lighting Lane pass will only be valid for the rest of the day. Once you receive it, be sure to use it quickly, as it doesn’t roll over into the next day.

  • Be mindful of other restrictions: Just like regular Lighting Lane passes, this special one will be tied to park hours and availability. Be mindful of ride times and be sure to check when the park is closing to ensure you use it before the end of the day.

Final Thoughts:

This bonus tip can be a game-changer when things don’t go as planned, especially when you get a ride-down scenario. Using your special Lighting Lane pass for a ride you’ve been waiting for or a more popular attraction can give you a lot more flexibility, reducing your overall wait time and optimizing your day in the parks. Just be sure to stay on top of cancellations and rescheduling to make sure you get the most out of your new pass!

Trivia question.

What was the name of the original skip to the front of the line service at Disneyland in CA?

Answer. FASTPASS. Disneyland's FastPass was first introduced in 1999 as a complimentary service that let visitors reserve access to around 20 different attractions throughout Disneyland Resort. When you approached an attraction in Disneyland there would be a que for Fastpass Distribution in which you would stick your theme park ticket into the machine, and it would give you back your park ticket along with a Fastpass ticket for that attraction. When you reached your designated attraction time you could enter the Fastpass return que at that attraction. Printed on the ticket was also the next time you could obtain another Fastpass. Introduced in 2013, FastPass+ allowed guests to make up to three reservations at once. However, the FastPass system at Disneyland was reimagined into Genie+ back in 2021 which as of 2024 has been updated to Lighting Lane.
